OUR MISSION

We provide authentic Montessori elementary education (ages 6-12), while allowing and enabling children to discover their inner potential and to excel academically and personally.

Our cornerstone is each individual’s emotional and psychological wellbeing, as well as character development, just like it was for Maria Montessori. Each child is viewed and treated as the individual she or he is: with different interests, learning styles, abilities, gifts, strengths, potentials and talents that need to be discovered, enhanced and invested in. With respect and individualized attention, each child can become an independent, self-aware, self-disciplined and self-motivated learner and global citizen of the world.

OUR SCHOOL
Morningside Montessori Elementary, is the first elementary school in Cyprus that promotes sustainable changes through innovative, non-mainstream teaching that enhance values of peace, reconciliation, inclusion, ecology and humanism, while following the Montessori method and philosophy. The school runs from 7:30 am (drop off) to 3:30 pm. Class begins at 8:30 am. Lunch can either be provided from home or there is an option for catering at an extra cost. On most days there are Afternoon Clubs which run until 5 pm at an extra cost. These vary from term to term, and they include (but are not limited to) Afro-Brazilian Capoeira, Drama Club, Chess Club, Spanish, Choir and Group Signing, Art Extravaganza, Yoga for Kids and English for beginners (ages 5-9).
Peace Education
Peace Education

Our school aims to promote grass root changes in society, towards peace and genuine egalitarian dialogue between future citizens of the world. At the heart of our program is Peace Education, an essential element of the Montessori method. We full-heartedly embrace Maria Montessori's thought that "Establishing lasting peace is the work of education; all politics can do is keep us out of war." From small interpersonal conflict, to larger instances of bias and bullying, educating for conflict resolution as well as for acceptance of differences is a cornerstone of our philosophy. As a country in conflict, cultural integration for our new generation can offer hope not only for Cyprus but for the Middle East.

Ecology
Ecology

We emphasize the fact that we are part of a larger system that extends into the environment. We aim to assist in the cultivation of a deep love for nature and respect for life. Our school places emphasis on coming in frequent contact with the earth.

At Morningside we place particular emphasis to the world that surrounds us: the natural environment as well as the social world – immediate and afar. We believe that we are not isolated from our surroundings. As Dr. Montessori put it “We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.” This unity is first and foremost achieved without our community and it reaches out to the world at large.

Research in the field of education points to the fact that nature is a powerful teacher: ‘the outdoor classroom’, as it often been referred to, cultivates curiosity about learning in general as well as respect for all living things. Frequent contact with nature in beneficial for the psychological and emotional well-being of the child (and adult alike). Children who are connected to the natural world become a beacon for positive change.

Trilingual
Trilingual

Morningside is the first tri-lingual school of the country, where all three of Cyprus's official languages are embraced and taught. Learning about ‘otherness’ as something to be embraced; developing empathy and compassion, as well as self-respect; understanding and appreciating each child’s difference, and individuality these are all aspects of Montessori philosophy that we highlight. To that extend, we aim to promote communication, understanding and appreciation of the two main communities of the island via the school’s trilingual emphasis. The teaching language of our school is English, and the same time all children will be taught Greek and Turkish.

Community & Inclusion
Community & Inclusion

We are all interconnected and interdependent. We need to cooperate and unite to maximize our potentials, not compete. Our school’s community includes not just the students, teachers and staff members, but also the children’s families. We aim to embrace and reach our students' families, through dialogue, ongoing communication, education and community events. Together we can create the environment within which our children will thrive.

Morningside similar to all Montessori schools, welcomes all children: We promote inclusion for all.  A minimum of 10% and a maximum of 15% of our students are children with visible or invisible disabilities.

WHY MONTESSORI
  • A well-balanced, holistic system: a method that focuses not only on cognitive, but also on social, emotional, creative and moral skills and development.
  • An educational system that has been proven to be effective for over a century, that is based on solid scientific research and is in agreement with recent neuroscience findings about the way the brain works and learns.
  • Freedom to choose from a well-prepared array of developmentally appropriate and child centered activities and tasks that promotes life-long love for learning and exploration.
  • A method that respects and aims to expand and explore each individual’s potentials for growth.
  • An individualized method that meets children where they are, and does not use competitive forms of assessment.
Maria montessori
Maria montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870–1952) is one of the most innovative childhood pedagogues of the 20th Century. She was a pioneer in the field of childhood education and, impressively, her ground-breaking method has survived almost intact for more than a century. The Montessori method is still considered one of the most robust pedagogical systems, with more than 7,000 Montessori schools all over the world. The method’s resilience is due to its profound theoretical foundations that includes elements from the fields of pediatrics, child and developmental psychology, pedagogical anthropology as well as philosophy, and to its detailed and vigorous methodology.

Dr. Maria Montessori was the first female to receive a medical degree from the University of Rome (in 1893); she was also a holder of a doctorate degrees in psychology and philosophy, and a professor of anthropology. Maria Montessori was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize (in 1949, 1950, and 1951) for furthering international understanding through her work.

This brilliant, driven woman, who was evidently ahead of her times, was the creator and developer of a unique educational philosophy and pedagogy that goes well beyond the transmission of knowledge. The Montessori Method aims to cultivating the whole being.
